We've been doing a CSA share with Pennypack Farm since June, and with the season winding down soon, it felt like the right time to share how it's gone.
How Our Share Works
We split a 6 unit share with my sister, which turned out to be exactly the right amount. A CSA box comes with produce you didn't necessarily choose, so having someone to split it with means less waste and more variety on both of our tables each week.
The Wildflower Share Has Been a Favorite
Alongside the vegetable share, we also signed up for the
wildflower share, an 8 week run of fresh cut flowers, and it's been one of our favorite parts of the whole season. Each week, the kids get to pick out a few flowers themselves, and there's something about that small detail that makes the bouquet on my table feel that much more special. There's something nice about having fresh flowers in the house on a regular basis without having to think about it, and knowing they were chosen by two very proud little hands makes it even better.
What We'd Tell a Friend Considering It
A CSA share means committing to a season of local produce before you know exactly what you're getting each week. That unpredictability took some getting used to, but it's become one of the things we look forward to. Between the vegetables and the flowers, it's pushed us to cook a little differently and enjoy the season a little more intentionally.
As our Pennypack season comes to a close, we're already talking about signing up again next year, and maybe adding another share to split with family.
